چکیده

The objective of the presented research is to develop an efficient control system for highway load effects that involves the control of various parameters including: truck weight (axle weights and axle spacing), truck load distribution on bridge girders, dynamic load, strain, stress and deflection of bridge components, and verification procedure for the minimum load carrying capacity. This study involves experimental and analytical efforts. The individual components of the comprehensive testing program were verified on over 20 bridges. The load was applied in form of fully loaded (up to the legal limit) trucks and military tanks. The considered loading combinations include a single vehicle and two trucks side-by-side. The results of these and previous tests indicate that the girder distribution factors (GDF) specified by the code (AASHTO) for the spans from 10 to 30m are rather conservative. Dynamic load factors (DLF) were also measured for a single truck and two trucks side-by-side. It was observed that the dynamic load is not related to static load, and therefore DLF (defined as the ratio of dynamic load and static load) decreases for larger static load. Deflections due to truck loads are also considerably lower than analytically predicted values. The field tests confirmed that the developed procedures are efficient and can be used as an alternative way to evaluate the adequacy of the bridge. Proof load tests using military tanks turned out to be efficient procedure for verification of the minimum load carrying capacity of a bridge.

Probabilistic Evaluation of Seismic Performance of RC Bridges in Iran

Many existing bridges were designed without adequate consideration of seismic risk. The full or partial collapse of even one major bridge in a city or community would have destroying results. There has been focuses on developing fragility-based seismic vulnerability of existing usual bridges in Iran or support decision making on seismic upgrade. This article focuses on developing performance b...

Development and Practical Application of a Lifetime Management System for Prestressed Concrete Bridges

A practical Bridge Management System has been developed by the author, which is referred to as the Japanese Bridge Management System (J-BMS) for existing concrete bridges. This paper introduces a newly developed bridge management system for the prestressed concrete (PC) bridges (J-BMS PC version) which is integrated with the PC bridge rating expert system (PC-BREX). The proposed system is able ...

OPTIMUM DESIGN OF LONG-TERM DEFLECTION IN SEGMENTED PRESTRESS BRIDGES BY CONSIDERING THE EFFECTS OF CREEP AND SHRINKAGE

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long-term vertical deformations of segmented pre-tensioned concrete bridges by a new approach. It provides a practical and reliable method for calculating the amount of long-term deformation based on creep and shrinkage in segmented prestress bridges. There are various relationships for estimating the creep and shrinkage of concrete. The analytical r...

Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Steel Bridges

Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is a means of evaluating structural components without damaging them. It can be used to evaluate structural systems, as well as specific structural components. Nondestructive testing is particularly useful for evaluating inservice bridges, since the bridges can remain in tact and open to traffic during the inspection and evaluation period. The NDE methods discuss...
